What your paycheck won't tell you

Forty-one years of paychecks. Here's what to do with yours.

I'm Betty. I did payroll in Dayton, Ohio for forty-one years, first with a pencil, then on a computer. Every other Friday I handed people their checks, and nobody ever showed them what to do next. So now I do: every dollar gets a job.

Betty is an AI character. Her story is fiction; the math is real.

Three things your paycheck won't tell you

It isn't that you're bad with money. Nobody gave you the map.

NO. 1

You get 26 checks, not 24.

Paid every other week? Then two months a year bring a third check. Plan the month on two, and give the third one a job before it arrives.

NO. 2

Your bills are monthly. Your pay isn't.

That's why the second half of the month feels like a drought. Match every bill to the paycheck that arrives before it's due, and the drought gets a map.

NO. 3

Irregular isn't unexpected.

Car registration, back-to-school and Christmas come every year. Divide the yearly cost by your paychecks and set that much aside every payday.

Who is Betty?

A payroll grandma. Made up, on purpose.

Betty Marlow is an AI character. Her story, from Dayton to forty-one years of payroll to Earl, who still can't balance a checkbook, is fiction. We made her because the budgeting basics nobody taught us are easier to hear from someone at a kitchen table.

The math isn't fiction. Everything Betty teaches is the plain, standard stuff good budgeting classes teach. She isn't a financial advisor, she never recommends financial products, and she'll never ask for your bank password.

Every dollar gets a job. — Betty

Questions

Fair questions, straight answers.

Is Betty a real person?

No. Betty is an AI character with a fictional backstory. The methods and the math in her videos and workbook are real.

Do I need an app or my bank login?

No. Everything works with a pencil, your pay stubs and a bank statement you read yourself. Nobody here will ever ask for your bank password.

Is this financial advice?

No. It's general education about budgeting and reading a pay stub. For tax withholding, the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or a tax professional is the right place; for debt you can't manage, a nonprofit credit counselor (nfcc.org).

I'm paid twice a month, or weekly. Does it still work?

Yes. The calendar and the workbook cover every-other-week, twice-a-month, weekly and monthly pay.

Can I get my money back?

See Withdrawal & refunds. If something's wrong with your file, email us and we'll fix it.
